| The parish community of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel broke ground for a new statue dedicated to Pope John Paul II on October 16th, the 24th anniversary of his election to papacy. The 3000# bronze statue was designed by Fr. Walter J. Ptak in conjunction with renowned Polish artist Czeslaw Dzwigaj of Krakow, Poland. Although Dzwigaj has sculpted approximately 25 statues of the Pope worldwide, the Mt. Carmel Statue represents the first one commissioned for the USA. It was commissioned during the great Jubilee Year 2000 to serve as a permanent reminder of the Centennial Celebration of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish. Description of pictures above: (l-r) Fr. Ptak is assisted in the ground breaking process by an OLMC Kindergarten Student and an OLMC High School Senior; Fr. Ptak leads the group in prayer and blesses the spot where the statue will be erected; an OLMC 8th Grader is assisted by an OLMC 2nd Grader in unveiling a smaller version of the original statue for the group to view and Fr. Ptak poses with the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel School Children on this momentous occasion. |
