PHILOSOPHY

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School strives to assist parents in providing quality education, based on Gospel values, for children K-8.  We believe that every child has spiritual, academic, cultural and social needs.  Our Lady of Mt. Carmel provides an environment conducive to integrating Catholic principles into all areas of learning with emphasis on family values, challenges and opportunities for the 21st century.


MISSION

The mission at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School is to instill the Gospel message into the daily lives of students through worship and service to others.  We foster the development of self confidence, leadership, initiative and creativity so that each student can recognize their own potential.  A challenging educational curriculum is provided.  It enables students to make ethical choices throughout their lives and motivates them to work for peace and justice in the global society.  A sense of competition and fairness is also developed through the availability of physical education programs and extra curricular activities.


ACCREDITATION

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School is accredited by the Michigan Non-Public School Accrediting Association (MNSAA), a chapter of the National Federation of Non-Public State Accrediting Association.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School is under the administration of the Pastor, Fr. Walter J. Ptak, and the principal, Mr. Timothy Scanlon.  All staff members are highly educated and fully certified.


CURRICULUM

In compliance with the guidelines of the Archdiocese of Detroit and the State of Michigan, the following subjects are taught at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School:  Art, Computers, English, Handwriting, History, Language Arts, Mathematics, Music, Physical Education, Religion, Science, Social Studies and Spelling.

Planned religious activities reinforce the morals and values taught at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel.  Students attend prayer corner on a daily basis and Mass on a weekly basis, participate in monthly Eucharistic Days of Adoration,  recite the rosary during the Marian months of October and May, attend Stations of the Cross during Lent and process in annual Forty Hour, Holy Thursday, Easter Sunday and May Processions.

In addition to the challenging curriculum offered on a daily basis, the following enrichment classes are offered afterschool for a minimum cost:  Art, Ballet, Polish, Sign Language and Spanish.


EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Students at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School have the opportunity to participate in and benefit from the following extracurricular activities:  Catechism Bowl, Choir, Christian Service Food/Penny Drives, CYO Athletic Programs, Junior National Honor Society, Recreational Soccer and Shooting Stars Recreational Basketball.


ATHLETICS

CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) Athletics are offered to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Elementary School Students attending Grades 5-8.  Baseball, Basketball, Cross Country, Soccer, Softball and Volleyball are the current offerings.

Students attending Grades 1-4 have the opportunity to attend 'Shooting Stars', a recreational basketball camp, or participate in recreational soccer.
